FORB MIXTURES (See 2007/2008 Catalogue, Page 2 : click THE PATH TO THE SEED)

Philosophy of Earthskin's mixtures:   These mixes are designed to provide a foundation of common prairie species that can stand alone or be supplemented with other species that fit each moisture regime. My goal is to provide a balance between planting enough seed to achieve a representation of each species and keeping the cost of establishment reasonable for many applications.

Features of Earthskin's mixtures:

  • Known composition by species and weight of each species based upon Pure Live Seed (PLS) weights.

  • Separate Packaging by Species.   Each forb species is packaged separately (for orders of at least one half acre or one pound of forb mix), and labeled by name and weight of contents.    Benefits of separate packaging include:  facilitation of individual seed treatment, mosaic planting, or placement of small or large seeds in separate seed boxes in the planter.

  • Composed of wildflowers only or wildflowers plus grasses.

  • Do not contain seeds of non native annuals and do not contain carriers such as ground corn cob grit

  • Based upon the price per pound listed for each species.  We do not inflate the prices of mixtures compared with the practices of many of our competitors.

We offer five standard forb mixtures: dry, dry-mesic, mesic, and two wildlife.  The dry mixture is suitable on droughty soils such as sand or southern slopes of hills.  The mesic mixture is composed of species that grew on soils with more available soil moisture such as loams on flat or slightly rolling land.  The dry-mesic mixture represents a gradient between dry and mesic.    The dry species tend to be shorter and less aggressive than the mesic species.   The wildlife mixtures are designed primarily to provide habitat for a variety of different planting conditions.

Custom Mixtures:    We also offer custom mixtures designed to meet your specific needs.  Give me a call to tell me about your needs.
